Where construction containers now stand, a completely new campus plaza will have taken shape in a few years' time. By 2030, the area between the bus stop and the university's main entrance (building A) will be redesigned with outdoor common areas, a sheltered bus waiting area and a parking garage for bicycles. The architecture competition for the new campus centre has now been decided. campus.kn presents the winning concept "MobilityCentre" by Henning Larsen architects.

The new campus plaza is basically laid out on two levels: an underground parking garage for bicycles, and a gently undulating area above with curved benches and a park for recreation. Key design features of the open space include greenery and the use of wood elements. Ramps and lifts ensure that all levels are completely accessible.

The parking garage for bicycles
Underground doesn't have to mean dark and stuffy: The parking garage for bikes connects the campus in every direction, its roof is open to the east and west, and numerous openings let daylight and air into the interior. The parking garage even has greenery on the lower level: Trees grow through the openings in the roof and will provide shade for the plaza in the long-term.

Around 1,500 spaces for bikes and e-bikes will be available. With clear and intuitive guidance, the bike parking garage connects its users directly to the various buildings. It is fully accessible from three sides. An elevator links the parking garage with the bus stop.

The outdoor design concept
The gently undulating roof of the future bike parking garage will be the central campus plaza. Located between the Forum Konstanz, the bus stop and the three large lecture halls (buildings A, R and the new building X), it will be a bustling space that students, staff and visitors cross daily – where they meet and mingle. Bike traffic underground and pedestrian traffic above are separate, but linked for easy connections.

The plaza is designed like a park, with plants and numerous seating elements. It also houses the university beer garden, sports zones as well as an event area with a stage. The slightly concave roof channels rainwater to the edges, where it is stored and used for irrigation.

The bus pavilion
The bus stop waiting area will be completely covered. The wooden roof structure is visible from afar and marks the first welcome point upon arrival at the campus. Towards the front of the plaza, the wooden roof flows into a pavilion that connects the bus stop with the plaza.

The architecture sketches give a great impression of the future campus plaza, that will come to life by 2030.
